Laboratory Technician

Salary Range :9.0000 To 11.0000 (USD) Hourly

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Laboratory Technician functions in a full service custom processing winery, performs analytical and practical lab activities, maintains lab records and bulk wine inventories and monitors analytical and QC lab activities.

Performs routine analysis utilizing appropriate distillation, titrametric, and instrumental methods as required.

Operates laboratory instruments such as an auto-titrator, refractometer, balances, foss integrator and other instruments as required to perform duties.

Enters test results into the laboratory information management system in a timely manner.

Prepares chemical solutions used in the laboratory.

Maintains appropriate documentation of all work performed in accordance with laboratory quality policies.

Performs other work related duties as assigned by the Supervisor including, but not limited to, sampling, cleaning and special projects.

Practices safe work habits and maintains work area and instrumentation in a clean and orderly state.

Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.

Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.

Supports the cellar operations by performing duties that include preparation of grapes and wine, track wine blends, maintaining and blending wine in preparation for bottling, evaluation and preparation of oak barrels for wine tracking barrels and chemistry.

Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor

Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

One year winery lab experience or cellar experience preferred

Good interpersonal skills, proven ability to communicate effectively and work well with other employees

Self-starter

Skilled in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using whole numbers.

Experience with MS Word and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions and ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

Must be able to lift 20 pounds.

Exposure to outside elements (heat, wet and/or damp conditions, cold).

May require heavy physical work (lifting, bending, climbing, pulling, or squatting for long periods of time).

Long hours during crush and peak periods (including all shifts).

Laboratory Supervisor

Job Class Management

Essential Job Responsibilities:

LAB OPERATIONS & ANALYSIS

  • Demonstrate and direct basic/advanced instrumentation techniques

  • Oversee wine quality analysis pertaining to grape fermentation, cellar/aging operations, storage, tank/line sanitation and bottling.

  • Oversee routine wine analysis utilizing appropriate methods as required. Must be able to establish priorities as it relates to the urgencies of incoming samples due to bottling, adjustments, shipment certification and other requirements.

  • Ensure accurate operations of all laboratory equipment/instrumentation, and ability to troubleshoot when necessary to ensure accurate results.

  • Maintain and calibrate analytical instruments in the laboratory in optimum operation condition.

  • Develop, document, and validate analytical methods for wine which are compliant with Good Laboratory Practices, as needed. Maintain accurate and complete records of all laboratory work, ensuring the proper use and preparation of standardized chemical solutions used in the laboratory.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES PLANNING

  • Execute the plan data collection, analysis and reporting of monthly analysis on inventory of wines held in cellar.

  • Recommend new equipment and assist in selecting suppliers and appropriate accessories for proposed equipment.

  • Ensure the maintenance of inventories, order supplies.

  • Effectively apply appropriate SOPs to projects and keep notes.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and makes constructive suggestions for change.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATION

  • Positively contribute to the achievement of the team objectives and goals.

  • Ensure lab users have been trained on the correct use of the lab equipment, in addition to mentoring and disciplining lab users for not following safety policies/procedures that have been established for the lab

  • Schedule safety training for new lab users and retraining for lab users who are in need of refresher training to include but not be limited to: equipment training, safety training and/or lab safety plan reviews and ensure the training has been documented

  • Contribute, through regular meetings, to the development and improvement of the Lab and quality team.

  • Maintain positive relationships with vineyard and key decision makers.

  • Assign special projects as needed/requested by the Director of Winemaking & Winery Operations, including, but not limited to, program analysis, training and development.

COMPLIANCE

  • Understands and ensures compliance to all safety requirements. Drives safety culture.

  • With Safety coordinator and Quality Control, develops policy and procedure.

  • Understands and ensures regulatory compliance and works collaboratively with regulatory (TTB)/governmental agencies.

FOOD SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain HACCP certification

  • Maintain and update GMPs

MUST REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Enology or Biology and a minimum of 5 years industry experience or equivalent combination work/education. MS and research experience preferred.

  • Good working and theoretical knowledge of analytical instrumentation.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products with intermediate to advanced Excel

  • Ability to work in an environment that has changing priorities and multiple projects

  • Ability to manage a team

  • Strategic thinker – demonstrates ability to see big picture, anticipate changes and impact on trends, asks what if questions, develops recommendations

  • Ability to apply mathematical skills for preparing and verifying analysis with a strong attention to detail.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, carry up to 40 lbs. & push and pull up to 20 lbs. on an occasional basis; ability to sit and work at a desk for long periods of time; requires ability to walk and stand; reach outward and upward, climb, crawl, squat, kneel, and bend; requires hand and finger dexterity for keyboarding and working at computer for extended periods of time.
